Schools sport: Otago success in secondary tournaments

Books and mathematic equations have taken a back seat for thousands of secondary school pupils this week as tournament week gets its annual outing.

Every year thousands, and we mean thousands of secondary school pupils take off to all corners of New Zealand to play in tournament of all sports from rugby to ice hockey.

Judging success in tournaments can be hard. It is not always comparing apples with apples.

But Otago teams have taken some plaudits around the country against what is some tough opposition.

South Otago High School won the South Island under-15 junior co-educational rugby tournament for a second straight year.

Playing in the mud in Nelson, the side won its three pool games and then beat Waimea College 32-0 in the quarterfinal.

It defeated John McGlashan College 7-3 in the semifinal and Rangiora High School 12-7 in the final.

In basketball, the St Hilda's Collegiate junior side won the South Island junior girls tournament in Nelson.

The team won the final by beating Ashburton College 72-50 in the final. Megan Borst top-scored with 31 points for St Hilda's.

Otago Girls' High School won the Gary Snowden football tournament in Ashburton. The side met Hillmorton High School in the final and won 1-0 through a penalty.

The Kavanagh boys football team won the Linwood tournament played in Dunedin, beating John McGlashan College 3-2 in the final.

King's High School won the final of the South Island secondary school championships, also held in Dunedin.

At the Coaches Cup boys hockey tournament in Oamaru, St Kevin's College reached the final, only to lose to Buller High 3-0. Dunstan High finished third.

At the Jenny McDonald hockey tournament in Cromwell the final was drawn 1-1 between Ashburton College and James Hargest College of Invercargill.

At the Johnson Cup in Gore, John McGlashan College finished runner-up to Christchurch Boys' High School 3-0 and King's High School finished third.

At the South Island netball championships in Timaru, Bayfield High School was third in C grade and won promotion to B grade. Lawrence Area School won C grade and was also promoted to B grade.

Queens High School was the winner of plate in B grade, finishing 17th in B grade.

In the under-15 national rugby tournament staged in Dunedin, Otago Boys' High School finished 15th, winning its final game yesterday. The tournament was won by Wesley College, which won the final 18-13, after it trailed 13-3 at the break to Mt Albert Grammar.

Although most tournaments finished yesterday, a zone 4 basketball tournament will conclude at the Edgar Centre today. The South Island curling championships started in Dunedin yesterday and will conclude tomorrow.
