Southern falters in league final

Southern United won pretty much every trophy available at the New Zealand super league finals in Wellington at the weekend.

The only one missing?

That shiny cup for the overall winner.

Southern United played some superb futsal, and claimed all the major individual honours, but was pipped 5-4 by the Canterbury Dragons in a thrilling men’s final at the Ākau Tangi Sports Centre.

The final was scoreless for the first seven minutes until prolific marksman Adam Hewson slammed in a goal with his left foot to give Southern a 1-0 lead.

With Hewson always looking dangerous, playmaker Oban Hawkins controlling the middle of the court, and Sean Cooper, En Watanabe and George Willett all linking nicely, Southern looked the likelier team and dominated much of the first half.

Canterbury got back on equal terms with a deflected goal.

That was a minor setback for Southern, which took a 2-1 lead into halftime from a well-worked set-piece and a delicate shot into the bottom corner from wily campaigner Michael Sannum.

Whatever the Dragons tinkered with at the break seemed to work, as they took control of the final with a flurry of counter-attacking goals.

Southern either ran out of gas or simply got caught on the hop as the Dragons pounced in the 23rd, 25th, 27th and 33rd minutes to rocket to a 5-2 lead.

En Watanabe fired one back for Southern, which then brought on the "fifth man", taking off goalie Fraser Hunter, in search of two late goals.

Sean Cooper scored one with just 31sec left on the clock but one late attack was foiled.

Southern, powered by a Hewson hat-trick, had pummelled Capital 5-1 in one semifinal, and Canterbury upset Auckland City 3-1 in the other.

Hewson claimed both the Golden Boot and league MVP honours, while Hunter claimed the Golden Gloves.

Papakura United defended its title in the women’s league.
