John McGlashan College took the short route to next week's final when it demolished Balmacewen 6-0 in the major semifinal of Dunedin premier club tennis on Saturday.

Balmacewen gets a second life, and plays the winner of the minor semifinal, Eastern Harbour, tomorrow night.

McGlashan, winner of the recent South Island secondary schools title in Timaru, was bolstered by the addition of former student Oliver Reid and won all four singles in short order.

Paddy Ou has had a lot of tennis lately and, although Shaun Paringatai mixed it with him in most rallies and showed a number of clever touches, Ou relied on his solid all-round game and dropped only two games in the top single.

Carlos Reid, like Ou, has played a series of hard matches for his school and province at junior and senior level, and was too strong for Will Bourne, also losing only two games.

Oliver Reid, returning to match play, beat George Alexander 6-0 6-1 and showed too much consistency, while Mitchell Sizemore was in similar form when he dropped only two games to Matt McCutcheon.

Paringatai and Bourne took Ou and Sizemore to 16-14 in the third set tiebreak.

Eastern Harbour also won all four singles against Taieri and the consolation doubles were played in a shortened format with the tie already decided.

The feature match saw a battling 7-5 7-6 win to Mike Smith against Andrew Mitchell, with both players showing fine skills and intensity.

The women's straight knockout semifinals will be played tomorrow, with St Clair Gold meeting Mornington-Roslyn and Eastern Harbour playing Balmacewen.

The only rubber played on Saturday went to Debby Stevens (St Clair), who beat Nicky Wallace 6-2 6-2.
