Wanaka Yacht and Power Boat Club commodore Chris Conroy has been named the Otago Yachting Association sailor of the year, for his efforts in encouraging youth sailing and new members.

It is the first time the Carey Trophy has been been awarded to a sailor in the greater Otago area, according to Conroy, who collected the honour at a function in Dunedin last weekend.

Conroy has been the Wanaka club commodore for four years and steps down at the end of this year.

The club has a thriving training scene with nearly 40 new trainees in 2009. The result has been increased membership, increased private ownership of Optimists and 420s and more opportunities to compete in club and other South Island regattas.

Conroy has also been heavily involved in supporting Mt Aspiring College pupils in their team racing events at secondary school level.

The club is now well equipped to host a range of events from club level through to A-class Nationals.

Conroy also introduced a ski-sail regatta, combining sailing and downhill skiing in a team regatta event that attracts competitors from around the country.
