Residents in parts of Christchurch are being warned to expect higher tides than normal over the next few days.

The Christchurch Transport Operations Centre is warning residents around the Heathcote and Avon rivers, especially near New Brighton Rd, to take precautions as the areas are vulnerable to the high tides.

Although heavy rain has not been forecast for the city, residents in these areas have been asked to "extra care" over the coming days.

On Thursday, expect high tides of about 1.62m between 5am-10.50am and in the evening from 5.40pm-10.55pm.

CTOC spokesman Steven Man also says motorists, cyclists and pedestrians travelling for essential reasons or for exercise should be mindful of others on the roads.

"We want to repeat the government's message to stay at home and restrict travel to essential trips only."
