The renewal work is due to get under way on November 24 and take about six months. It will include road, safety, and accessibility improvements between Hawke St and Bowhill Rd.
A section of Marine Pde near Hawke St will be re-surfaced with asphalt, get a kerb and channel renewal, pedestrian safety improvements and bus stop upgrades.
The water main between Bowhill Rd and Lonsdale St will also be renewed, including a chipseal surface in places.
The project will see the construction of an on-road, two-way cycleway from Hawke St to Lonsdale St, and a shared path from Lonsdale St to Bowhill Rd.
Christchurch City Council general manager city infrastructure Brent Smith was pleased to see the work begin after extensive consultation with the community.
"We know the New Brighton community have been looking forward to this renewal project.
"We also acknowledge the work will be cause disruption and we appreciate the patience of the community in the upcoming months.
"We’re doing our best to make the disruption as minimal as possible."
The detour will initially consist of a one-way system along Marine Pde between Lonsdale St and Bowhill Rd while the contractor starts work on upgrading the water main.
The side streets, Bowhill Rd, Rāwhiti Ave and Lonsdale St, will be closed at times. The one-way system will extend further south to Hawke St after Christmas.
The contractor will communicate with the public if changes are needed to this system as the project progresses in 2026.
Work will be halted for three weeks over the Christmas and New Year period to reduce disruption to the public.
The work will also require 23 trees to be removed along Marine Pde. But the council will then plant 43 new trees along the new shared pathway to replace them.
The project is being funded by the central government's Christchurch Regeneration Acceleration Facility fund for transport projects.
