Sam Broughton wins second terms as mayor

Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton.
Sam Broughton has once again swept to victory in the mayoral race for Selwyn.

The incumbent mayor won by a landslide victory with 10,775 votes against nearest opponent and former mayor Bill Woods on 4104.

Mr Broughton said he was very happy with the results and wanted to thank Selwyn for their support.

Mr Broughton said the district council had made a lot of progress over the last three years.

This includes making made major investments in community infrastructure, completed earthquake works, and changing its consultation process to focus on speaking with residents on streets rather than in meetings.

He said it will be important the district council keeps costs in line with what it has signalled to ratepayers.

Mr Woods said he had stood to give people an alternative.

Selwyn is one of the fastest growing regions in the country with the population projected to reach to 81,413 by 2030.

It is not the first time Mr Woods, who was the second ever mayor in the district and served one term from 1992-1995, has lost to Mr Broughton.

He unsuccessfully ran against Mr Broughton in 2016 and received 1352 votes.

If Mr Woods had been elected as mayor the first thing he would have done was put elected councillors back into power - taking the power away from township, hall and community committees.

He also would have campaigned to split the district in two for rates purposes.

This year has seen a decrease in voter turn-out numbers for the Selwyn District with only 38.6 per cent of people voting in this year's local body elections.

In 2016, 44.55 per cent of Selwyn's population voted while in 2013 was slightly lower at 43.41 per cent.

Malvern's population had the highest voter turn-out of 47.95 per cent with 2870 voters.

There was only a margin of difference between Springs and the Ellesmere ward at 38.67 per cent (2085 votes) and 38.56 per cent (4757 votes) respectively.

Selwyn Central had the lowest voter turn-out with only 33.88 per cent of the ward's population voting. The ward's population made 5627 votes in total.
