City council updates its wheelie bin app

Christchurch City Council has released a new version of its free wheelie bin app to help residents put the correct items in their red, yellow and green bins.

The updated app enables people to receive reminders about which bins they need to put out for kerbside collection each week and has information about what items belong in each bin.

"The app’s search function is a great tool to use if you are uncertain about which bin a particular item belongs in," said council head of three waters and waste Helen Beaumont.

"All you have to do is enter the name of the item you want to dispose of and it will tell you which bin to put it in.

"There are hundreds of items included in the database so it covers most commonly disposed of items.

"If you enter an item that doesn’t belong in any of the bins, such as a gas cylinder, the app will tell you how you can safely dispose of it.

"The app is packed with useful tips and videos about our rubbish and recycling services so I would really encourage residents in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula to download it," Beaumont says.

"If you already have the app installed on your smartphone or tablet, the new version should automatically appear over the next few days."

The Christchurch Wheelie Bins app can be downloaded for free from the Apple Store and Google Play.
