North Otago By TERRY O'NEILL Union beat Valley by nine wickets in a game that lasted only 42 overs. Valley, sent in to bat by Union, was dismissed for 62 with Brad Fleming returning the outstanding figures of five for four, while Chris Ware, who took the first four Valley wickets, finished with four for 24. With Antony Cromwell (38 not out) leading the way, Union cruised to 66 for one in the 11th over.

Central Otago By RHYS CHAMBERLAIN Cromwell is the new holder of the Burnett Shield after its cricket team beat Blacks Hill by seven wickets at Poolburn on Saturday afternoon. It is the first time since 1974 that Cromwell will have the shield in its trophy cabinet for the winter. The home side won the toss and batted but struggled for runs as Cromwell's bowlers kept a tight line and length and proved hard to get away. Hamish Wilson was one of the few Blacks Hill players to get into double figures, scoring 17.

Central Otago By RHYS CHAMBERLAIN Naseby will contest the final of the Maniototo Eastern Districts cricket competition after it beat semifinal host Ranfurly by one wicket on Saturday afternoon. Ranfurly, batting first, managed 157 before being all out, thanks mostly to the batting of Ryan Dowling who made an excellent 59, and the Naseby bowlers who leaked 41 extras in the 34 overs before the hosts were dismissed. Karl McDiarmid bowled well however, taking three for 36, and Hamish McKenzie also took three wickets for 44 runs.

Central Otago - Rhys Chamerlain Ranfurly picked up a much-needed win over Naseby in the final round-robin match of the Maniototo Eastern Districts season to put it in second place behind Palmerston heading into the semifinals this weekend. It was a low-scoring affair, Ranfurly 116 all out from 40 overs. Luke Steele was the best of the Ranfurly batsmen, making 32, while Tim Miller (24) and Raymond Hollows (20) contributed. Rex Gibson and Karl McDiarmid each picked up three wickets, Gibson conceding just six runs from his eight overs.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill Albion and Oamaru tied in the second round of Dick Hunt Trophy cricket on Saturday, while Valley beat Borton Cup leader Union by one wicket at Weston. Oamaru won the toss and decided to bat first at Centennial Park.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill Valley and Union were winners in the first round of the Dick Hunt Trophy played in Oamaru on Saturday. Albion won the toss and put Valley in to bat and after 15 overs Valley was 44 for one. Nine overs later Valley looked strong at 71 for two but then lost four wickets for the addition of only 22 runs with Albion captain Ricky Whyte taking six for 24 off his 10 overs.

CENTRAL OTAGO - Rhys Chamberlain Naseby continued its winning start to the cricket season when it beat a youthful Palmerston side by 26 runs at Palmerston on Saturday. Batting first, the visiting side made 164 before being dismissed. James Pyle led the way with 61, supported by Mark Becker, who managed a well-played 40. James Grubb and Jarod Smilie restricted the Naseby score by taking three wickets each for the home side. Cam Grubb took two for 19.

CENTRAL OTAGO - Rhys Chamberlain Naseby picked up its second win in as many matches in the Maniototo Eastern Districts cricket competition on Saturday afternoon when it beat Waikouaiti by 10 wickets at home. The visitors batted first and Brad Williams and Murray Dempster led the charge with 45 and 44 runs respectively. John McMillan restricted their score to 160 for eight, taking three for 24, while Blair Brown and Tim McMillan had two wickets each with the ball.

CENTRAL OTAGO - Rhys Chamberlain Ranfurly had a first-up win in the first round of the Maniototo Eastern Districts cricket competition on Saturday when it beat Macraes, at Macraes, by 106 runs. Ranfurly compiled 204 for the loss of nine wickets thanks mainly to a superb 98 from No 8 batsman Gerard Steenkamp.

CENTRAL OTAGO - Rhys Chamberlain No matches in the Vincent twenty/20 cricket competition were played over the weekend due to two defaults and a pitch that was deemed unplayable. Wet weather during the week ensured that Dunstan was unable to host Albion thanks to a sodden wicket, while Slope Hill was once again unable to field a side to play Blacks Hill so had to default. The same scenario played out at the Alexandra club which had to default to Queenstown.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill Oamaru, Waitaki Boys' High School and Union recorded wins in the second round of Borton Cup cricket on Saturday. Oamaru decided to bat first against Albion and struggled through to 57 for three after 22 overs with Andrew Sewell leading the way with 22. Josh Gutsell (32) and Gary Mahuika (26) saw Oamaru through to 116 before the final wicket fell in the 40th over for 116 with Brad Kernahan taking three for 154.

North Otago By TERRY O'NEILL Awamoa skip Mark Lister and lead Terry Lake made it two in a row when the pair, with second Jim Paton, won the Bowls North Otago Centre triples yesterday at the Meadowbank club. They had combined the previous season to win the title. It was the second centre title for both. In section play, Lister lost the first of the four rounds of qualifying to Graeme Sangster (10-17) but won his next three rounds with victories over Barney Patton, 25-7, Jim Ellis, 16-7, and Jock Sangster, 10-9.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill Meadowbank Gold (9 pts) maintained its unbeaten run in the Centre Sevens competition with a third 3-0 win, this time over Awamoa Gold (4). Graeme Sangster beat Peter Bell 31-9 in the singles, Rowan Breen beat Graeme Larcombe 20-18 in the pairs and Jock Sangster beat Barney Patton 30-11 in the fours. Awamoa Blue (7) is second after a 2-1 win over Hampden (1). Sonny Brown beat Allan Deuchrass in the pairs 53-7, Ken Piner beat Noel Riddell in the fours 27-14.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill Waitaki Boys' High School, Union and Valley all recorded wins in the first round of Borton Cup cricket played on Saturday. Waitaki Boys' put Oamaru in to bat at Milner Park and dismissed it for 137 in the 48th over. Stephan Grobler took three for 14 and Adrian Myburgh, two for 28. Josh Gutsell (25) and Gary Mahuika (20) were the best of the Oamaru batsmen.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill The South Canterbury Development XV beat its North Otago counterparts 32-10 in the curtain-raiser at Timaru on Saturday. The South Canterbury star was halfback Willy Wright who kicked six penalties and two conversions for a total of 22 points. North Otago held South Canterbury in the first half with it 10-10 at halftime, Wright kicking a penalty and converting a try by prop Aki Savali, and for North Otago centre Steve Smith scored a try which Mark Roney converted, and he added a penalty.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill In a thrilling final, Excelsior won the North Otago premier grade netball final at the Hine Marae courts on Saturday with a 28-27 victory over Kurow. Excelsior led 15-11 at halftime. The game started cautiously with the ball going through court three times before the first goal was scored. It was then goal for goal with Excelsior leading 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill Excelsior will meet Kurow in the premier netball grand final next Saturday after both won their semifinals on Saturday. Excelsior led Athletic Maroon 17-16 at halftime before holding on for a 27-22 win. It was an excellent game, with Athletic unable to reproduce its form of the previous week and it made a lot of basic errors.

CENTRAL OTAGO - Rhys Chamberlain It was finals time for Central Otago netball over the weekend and in Alexandra Molyneux A and Dunstan High School A played out a Premier 1 thriller for the Vincent Shield. Molyneux A took the silverware by a solitary point 30-29. The school team fresh off a third placing in the B grade at the South Island Champs, came into the match full of confidence and attack Shaun Robinson, along with Jonelle Fulton and Jenna Keane, led the side to a three-goal lead mid-way through the third quarter.

NORTH OTAGO By Terry O'Neill Kurow is the only unbeaten side in the premier grade rugby top four playoffs after beating St Kevin's A 27-22 at the Hine Marae courts on Saturday. It was a slow game with Kurow leading 4-2 at quarter time and 11-8 at halftime. Both teams took time to settle with St Kevin's A making a lot of changes before the South Island Secondary schools netball tournament this week. Kurow produced a strong full court defence. Vicki Laughton at goal defence was in outstanding form, taking some spectacular interceptions.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill Athletic Maroon was too strong for a depleted St Kevin's A side in premier grade netball at the weekend, racing away to a 30-15 win after leading 16-6 at halftime. Athletic played a fine team game with solid performances through court. Petra Aspros and Lucy Adams featured at each end of the court, guiding Athletic Maroon to a 15-point win. St Kevin's was hit by injuries before the game and had to make several positional changes.

NORTH OTAGO - Terry O'Neill A hat trick of goals to Tony Moore guided the Meadowbank Reserves to a 3-2 win over Roncalli College in their football match in Timaru on Saturday. Roncalli, through a brace of goals by Jamie Smith, led 2-1 at halftime but Moore found the back of the net twice in the second half. St Kevin's College upset Thistle B, the top team in section B, with a 1-0 win. It was 0-0 at halftime but John Easton gave St Kevin's the winning goal in the second half.
