Dunedin marking World Car Free Day

Every year, on or around September 22, Dunedin joins more than 2000 cities around the world to celebrate World Car Free Day.

Today, the Dunedin City Council is encouraging people to skip the traffic, put down the car keys and try a new way of getting around.

DCC Transport group manager Jeanine Benson said "whether it’s walking, biking, taking the bus or choosing your skateboard or e-scootering, it all helps reduce congestion on our roads and creates a better environment."

"Lockdown gave us an opportunity to use our streets and experience our city in a different way. More walking, more cycling and less time in our cars.

"If you’re heading into the office, ask around and see if anyone is travelling in your direction and car-pool.

"Try biking or walking part or all the way," Ms Benson said.

"Buses are another option ... Maybe walking or biking short distances to your local supermarket or shops or for the school drop-off and pick-up is the thing you choose to do. Whatever it is, you’ll be doing your bit for the environment."

The Otago Regional Council has made buses free for the day.

Connecting Dunedin staff were in the Octagon first thing this morning, handing out coffee vouchers and asking people’s opinions on how the city could improve the use and accessibility of alternative modes of transport.

Connecting Dunedin is a partnership between the Dunedin City Council, Otago Regional Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, which aims to improve the city’s transport system.

They are encouraging people to use alternatives to private cars, such as walking, cycling and using public transport, as this can bring environmental and health benefits for people.
