Lawn bowls returns as popularity continues to grow

With more than 35,000 people registered across the country to play lawn bowls this season, the sport is continuing to prove its popularity.

Once again this season the Southern Television — Channel 39 crew will be out and about on Saturday mornings to cover games over the summer months.

Our aim will be to cover a wide range of clubs and competitions in Rub of the Green.

Coverage started last weekend with the section 1 pairs game from Green Island.

This year we have added the option of watching via live stream on demand at odt.co.nz or watching the game on air on a Saturday night or Sunday afternoon.

Our coverage includes commentary from seasoned bowls expert Dave Underwood, who is not only very excited to have bowls back on Southern Television — Channel 39, but also to be calling the shots each game.

Dave will take you through the plays of each game and explain to you the meanings of things such as the draw shot, the drive, upshot or weighted, the ditch rules and who the lead and skip are.

Rub of the Green will also invite guests on each week to give some commentary as to what is happening in their clubs and competitions.

Rub of the Green games will be live streamed on to odt.co.nz from 9am on Saturdays and will be screened on Southern Television — Channel 39 (Freeview HD Dunedin and Invercargill) on Saturday at 7pm, and Sunday at noon.
