The good times continue to roll at Dunedin’s Playhouse Theatre, as its children’s theatre team present the love, magic and chaos of Sleeping Beauty.

The production, which runs for a school holiday season from July 4-12, was written by Playhouse stalwarts Sharon Young, Jilly Moore and Christine Colbert, with original songs by Serenity Nielsen and Danny Still and choreography by Sharon Young and Ella Verberne.

Sleeping Beauty is directed by Christine Colbert with musical direction by Serenity Nielsen.

In a statement, a Playhouse spokesperson said, in this version of Sleeping Beauty, it was Princess Briar Rose’s 16th birthday and there had not been so much drama at the palace since Maleficent gate-crashed Briar Rose’s christening and put a curse on her.

In this tale of fairies, christenings, marriages and Maleficent’s evil spell, the writers have kept all the elements of the traditional story, but have added a few surprises of their own.

A succession of comic princes and princesses are all in search of a life partner, and only some magical intervention from the Lilac Fairy can sort out the chaos.

The show features many of the colourful costumes from the first Playhouse production of Sleeping Beauty in 2004, created by Val La Hood.

With its original songs and choreography, performed by an enthusiastic cast of 30 performers, Sleeping Beauty will wow school holiday audiences with action, colour and fairy tale energy.

Sleeping Beauty runs at the Playhouse, in Albany St, from July 4-12, with performances at 11am and 2pm, apart from Sundays which are 2pm only.
