A project to ensure children could swim safely has made a splash in the Taieri.

Altrusa International Taieri has donated swim gear including swimsuits, towels, goggles and bags plus water themed activity packs and books to five Taieri schools.

Pool toys, foam pool noodles and goggles have also been donated to Taieri College.

Altrusa president Anne McElwain said the project began with the group becoming aware of drowning statistics for the past two years.

"As a club we thought, what could we do that might help?"

The club approached schools in the area and five came back with what they needed.

Based on that information, swim gear, including togs, towels and goggles for 120 children, was recently donated to five Taieri schools.

Sets of towels and goggles for junior, middle and senior school hubs were also donated to schools so they had spares if children forgot items.

Water-themed activity packs and age-appropriate books were included .

The club also provided weighted dive toys, swim noodles and goggles to Taieri College.

Further funds had been earmarked to provide items for the new Mosgiel Pool, once it was opened and they could establish what items might be needed.

The main focus was that every child had the chance to learn to swim, she said.
