The hugely popular community plant sale, which will run from 12.30pm-4pm at Broad Bay School, will offer thousands of specially grown plants in a joint fundraiser for Broad Bay and Portobello Schools.
Parents, keen plant growers and plant sale organising committee members Isabella Harrex (Broad Bay School) and Grace McPherson (Portobello School) have been hard at work for months growing a huge collection of plants, including tomatoes, berries, vegetables, chillies, cucumbers, beans, sweetcorn, peonies, perennials, bulbs, native trees, shrubs and ground covers, and grasses.
Along with plants there will also be food trucks, and the opportunity to have a picnic on the school grounds.
"We have a good selection of top-quality plants that you can’t typically find in the garden centres and, of course, the prices are very affordable," Ms Harrex said.
Members of the Friends of Broad Bay School and Pals of Portobello School were putting in a big effort to organise the plant sale, and there would be a large team of volunteers ready to help on the day.
"From past experience, we know that the plant sale will be very popular, so we are expecting a lot of people to come along," Ms McPherson said.
"Don’t leave it too late to come along, would be my advice."
The organisers say the Broad Bay Plant Sale is a great event for the two schools to work on together, and raises more than $10,000 for school programmes.
"It is a lovely, social thing to do, and it has great community support — it is also a huge amount of work," Ms Harrex said.
The two women put hundreds of hours into growing plants and, as Ms McPherson’s children have reached the age of moving on from the school, the time has come to call a halt to the sale.
"This year will be our last one, so it’s going to be pretty special," Ms McPherson said.
