The joyful West Harbour Community Awards was a stand-out event in a busy 2021 programme for the West Harbour Community Board.

"It was an amazing event, a great way to celebrate our local heroes, and was very much appreciated by the community," board chairwoman Francisca Griffin said.

Encouraged by the positive response to the November awards, the board had resolved to continue to hold them every three years as a board project.

The West Harbour Community Board was also excited to see the progress on the West Harbour shared cycleway-walkway and the State Highway 88 safety improvements, being driven by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

"Like the rest of the community, we are watching it take shape and anticipating how great it will be when it is completed," she said.

New public toilets in Purakaunui and St Leonards, part of the council’s long-term plan, had also been pleasing.

"These are really good community facilities, so we are delighted to have them," Ms Griffin said.

Top of the list for 2022 will be working on a local history project with the aim of placing historical information plaques at points of interest around Port Chalmers and the West Harbour area.

"This is going to be a very interesting project, as it will be looking at our local history from the first Maori settlers onwards," Ms Griffin said.

The board would continue to work with the council and contractors to help "keep the West Harbour the beautiful place that it is".
