New Zealand on Air is doing its bit to keep Kiwis employed as two new local drama series begin filming this week, and a second season of Go Girls gets the green light.

The comedy-drama series about three friends - Amy, Britta and Cody - seen through the eyes of their best mate Kevin, has proved to be a hit with New Zealand viewers.

It's a double dose of good news for Go Girls creators Gavin Strawhan and Rachel Lang, who are also the team behind TV2's upcoming series This is Not My Life, which has started filming in Auckland.

The 13-part series, which received close to $7 million in NZ on Air funding, is described as a "high-concept action-mystery drama" and stars former Hercules and Street Legal actor Charles Mesure, who has returned from Los Angeles, where he had roles on Ghost Whisperer, Crossing Jordan, Cold Case, Bones, Without a Trace and Lost.

Meanwhile, Great Southern Film and Television - the production company behind Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and Singing Bee - will turn its hand to television drama for the first time as it begins filming The Cult.

Described as "Prison Break meets Lost," the 13-part series is the story of four 20-somethings trapped in the secret community of Two Gardens.

The cast features former McLeod's Daughter star Lisa Chappell, Law & Order's Latham Gaines, EastEnders actor Andrew Grainger and Shortland Street's Renato Bartolomei.

The series received $6.45 million in NZ on Air funding and will be written by Kathryn Burnett, Nick Ward and Peter Cox - the same people behind The Strip, Street Legal and The Insider's Guide to Happiness.

Go Girls, which received $6.2 million funding for its first season, has consistently rated highly in the tough 8.30pm prime-time slot, averaging 311,000 viewers.

It ends this week with the second series slated for early next year.

"We are extremely pleased with the success of Go Girls," TVNZ head of television Jeff Latch said.

"The team at South Pacific Pictures has created another hit drama with great writing and high production values.

"We are excited to see where the team will go with series two."

NZ on Air chief executive Jane Wrightson agreed.

"The funding agency is delighted to help a local drama succeed . . .

"We've been looking for another popular prime-time drama series for a while, and Go Girls has delivered in spades."

The funding agency has committed $6.246 million to South Pacific Pictures for production of the second series. - The New Zealand Herald The final of Go Girls screens on Thursday at 8.30pm on TV2.
