Blue Mountain College: Kirsten McIntyre

A career in teaching or banking may keep Blue Mountain College deputy head girl Kirsten McIntyre (18) on her toes - but after recent experience as a dance tutor and sports coach that's exactly what she wants.

Kirsten, who has being learning various modern dance styles since 1995, has this year assisted her dance tutor with classes for primary school pupils.

The experience enabled her to choreograph and co-ordinate the college's entry in this year's Stage Challenge.

"It was good test of time-management skills and of finding ways to work with 70 [pupils] who all had different skill levels and getting them to do the same thing."

Kirsten's aptitude for making information accessible helped her qualify as a netball umpire in 2006, and she has since coached year 9 and 10 pupils at the sport.

But she is also very receptive to instruction, and received the school's top academic award in 2006 and 2007.

Kirsten says a recent accomplishment was gaining a Duke of Edinburgh (gold) award.

Achievements: School cricket, athletics, tennis and swimming representative; Duke of Edinburgh award (gold); Toastmasters Youth Leadership Award, National Hands on Science 2008, West Otago Theatrical Society 2007 "Silver Show Time", Spirit of Adventure (October), organising formal, school inter-house competition, outdoor education and cultural committee member.

Role model: "My Nan, who lives in Gore. She has always encouraged me to give everything a go even if you don't do well, and [she] doesn't judge.

Hopes for the future: "To become a rural banker, and then a teacher of dance or music - and travel".
