The Dunedin store of major Australasian craft and fabrics retailer Lincraft is set to close as the company shutters all its physical shops.
Lincraft’s New Zealand operations are headquartered at its Dunedin store in Filleul St and it also has stores in Taupō, Thames, Upper Hutt and two in Christchurch.
In a statement sent to customers this afternoon, the company said the news was "both difficult and deeply emotional for everyone".
"After more than 80 years of serving creative communities across Australia and New Zealand, we have made the decision to progressively close our physical store network over the coming months.
"This decision has not been made lightly.
"We understand that Lincraft holds a special place in the hearts of many customers, and we know this news will be disappointing for those who have shared our love of creativity, crafting, sewing, knitting and home projects."
The company said the decision followed "a prolonged period of challenging retail conditions, changing consumer behaviour, increased operating costs and growing pressure from low-cost international online competitors."
Lincraft Australia was established in its current form by owners John Maguire and Brian Swersky in 2005.
According to its website, Lincraft has 24 stores in Australia.
Mr Maguire said Lincraft had been part of Australian and New Zealand communities for generations.
"This has been an extremely difficult decision, particularly because of the impact on our team members, many of whom have given years of loyal service to the business.
"Our priority is to support our team members through this transition and to communicate with them as clearly and respectfully as possible."
The closure process would be managed progressively on a store-by-store basis.
Lincraft would continue to operate through an online platform.
The company said it was incredibly grateful for the support of its customers.
"On behalf of everyone who has been part of the Lincraft family over the past eight decades, thank you."
