Tuapeka Gold Print has just introduced a new computerised system that it believes will not only preserve every job but enhance processing and production to levels previously only dreamt of.
It has made what co-owner Brad Houghton calls "a significant investment" in the system which will create a paperless operation for a company which previously spent thousands of dollars on paper for orders.
The new system, SysPro, went live last Friday and three staff from Auckland-based Advanced Enterprise Resource Planning Consultants have spent several months working with Tuapeka Gold to customise the software.
Mr Houghton said the company was not content to let the tight economic times simply happen.
It was committed to protecting every job of its 65-plus staff but, at the same time, investing heavily in the company's future.
"This is about good business. It's as simple as that."
The new computerised system was part of the company taking a fresh look at its strategy and its place in the industry.
"This certainly isn't the time to be sitting on your hands. We believe this will give us more bang for our buck and increase our productivity," he said.
Mr Houghton said using the new software was all about "driving us towards a sustainable competitive advantage" and would allow each arm of the company to work together.
The programme would go out in a staged rollout.
While it would improve efficiencies for all parts of the business, the one noticeable feature would be the reduction in paper use.
Instead of several pieces of paper attached to each order, the progress of an order could be tracked by computers at each of Tuapeka Gold's seven arms.
