Most wools improve slightly in price

Prices for most styles of wool lifted slightly at a sale in Christchurch on Thursday.

The new season's hogget wool offering attracted strong competition, reflecting not only the excellent quality and presentation of wool but also the firm Chinese demand for those types, PGG Wrightson wool auctioneer Dave Burridge said.

Good-style fleece (31 to 35 micron) increased 1%-3%, while good-style full-length crossbred fleece (35 to 39 micron) lifted 1%-2%.

Second shear fleece (75mm to 125mm) was up 2%, crossbred oddments lifted 2%-4% and mid micron wool sold 2% dearer.

A very good offering of merino wool attracted keen interest from Italian buyers, Roger Fuller, from Elders Primary Wool, said.

There was good demand from a full bench of buyers for finer than 17 micron and coarser than 18 micron wool.

Prices for 17 to 18 micron wool eased on the back of that market easing in Australia this week.

Growers should be "well satisfied" with prices, compared with 12 months ago. Quality and soundness was a feature of the merino clip coming forward, Mr Fuller said.
