iPad 2 on sale, but where?

The Apple iPad 2 will be available in 25 countries tomorrow, but as usual it is not clear where it can be bought in New Zealand, one of the 25 countries.

Apple is again keeping the release details down to a selected few.

Retailers contacted yesterday said they did not know if they would have the iPad 2 for sale tomorrow.

That response was the same as when the Otago Daily Times rang them regarding the first iPad and the iPhone 4.

Complicating the release is that the iPad 2 will be available from 5pm local time in the 25 countries.

In New Zealand, iPad 2 with wi-fi will be available for a recommended retail price of $799 for the 16 gigabytes of memory, $949 for 32GB and $1099 for 64GB.

The iPad 2 with wi-fi and 3G will be available for $998 for 16GB, $1149 for 32GB and $1289 for 64GB.

The new iPad is 33% thinner and up to 15% lighter than the original iPad.

It now includes two cameras, a front-facing VGA for FaceTime and Photo Booth, and a rear-facing camera that captures HD video.

Research In Motion Ltd says its tablet computer, the BlackBerry PlayBook, will start selling in the United States and Canada on April 19 for $US499 (NZ$672) to $US699.

RIM said that customers could start pre-ordering the gadgets - its answer to Apple's popular iPad devices - through consumer electronics retailer Best Buy.

The PlayBook has a 17.5cm screen, smaller than the iPad.

It runs BlackBerry software and can connect to a phone, acting as a bigger screen for it.

RIM calls it the first "professional-grade tablet".

The $US499 PlayBook comes with 16GB of memory.

The 32GB costs $US599 and the 64GB $US699.
