A South Australian man who kidnapped and raped a European backpacker in a pig shed on his rural property has been jailed for at least 12 years and six months.

Gene Charles Bristow held the woman on his farm for 36 hours after he answered a Gumtree advertisement she had posted in search of work.

In sentencing him on Tuesday, District Court judge Geraldine Davison said he took her to the shed at Meningie and chained her hands and legs "in what must have been a terrifying experience for her".

"You took her mobile phone and disposed of it, and left her alone in that shed in the middle of nowhere," she said.

"You raped her on a number of occasions.

"It is impossible to understand how alone and devastated she must have felt as you humiliated and degraded her in a foreign country."

Judge Davison said the woman felt powerless and miserable, but it was her resourceful thinking that contributed to Bristow's eventual decision to release her in Murray Bridge the following day.

Bristow showed no emotion as he was sentenced to 18 years in jail, with a non-parole period of 12 years and six months.

Taking into account time already served, he will be eligible for parole in 2029.
