An army of accountants attending a conference in Queenstown are promising to "walk the talk" about economic recovery by opening their wallets to support local businesses.
About 200 chartered accountants from throughout the country arrived in the resort yesterday for the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand annual two-day conference.
Spokesman Mike Booker said many delegates had brought their partners, so the conference was bringing about 300 people to town.
With a conference theme of "Regenerate Aotearoa", the group was determined to match its words with actions by spending freely at the resort’s accommodation, hospitality and tourism businesses, Mr Booker said.
The traditional Friday night dinner at the conference venue was dropped, and delegates had been encouraged to dine at local restaurants.
"Adding in delegates’ partners, sponsors and event support staff, we expect to inject all up an estimated $30,000-plus into the local economy."
Packs of local products and experience vouchers were given to delegates in a prize draw.

Lol accountants spending freely, $100 per head injected into local economy, I have an idea, why not go out and make it a $1000 night, per head, thats a more realistic 'spend freely' good on you all for trying though.
$30,000 is the estimate of what is spent in Queenstown that remains in Queenstown for the benefit of Queenstown. The gross number is meaningless (say $250,000) if (and this is the case with regions) most spending is taken out as taxes/fees/transfer payments/dividends to Wellington or Auckland. Take petrol, it has over 55% in taxes on every litre- to Wellington. Wages, how much do you keep to live on after taxes, super and rental payments? Flights-most of that goes to Auckland, etc
