Lane tackles Liszt's Piano Concerto No 1, considered the most popular of all Liszt's works for piano and orchestra, in the Dunedin Town Hall with the Southern Sinfonia on Saturday.
"I originally learned it when I was 12 years old. I was on holiday with my grandmother and I remember playing it for her and six nuns.
"It's such a bizarre memory; a 12-year-old pounding away at Liszt on the piano while grandma and six nuns were sitting around me," he recalled this week.
"But, it's actually a piece that's popped up regularly during my life and career.
"It's a delightful piece and I'm really looking forward to playing it with the Southern Sinfonia. They're always a lot of fun."
Lane received a standing ovation when he played in Dunedin in 2004, with his performance described in an Otago Daily Times review as "outstanding piano mastery".
"I love coming back to Dunedin. It was the first New Zealand place I ever played in. It was in the late '80s or early '90s and I've been coming back there consistently ever since," Lane (49) said.
