CD Reviews: Anna Calvi

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Anna Calvi broadens her range on One Breath, offering up all the powerfully voiced drama of her strong self-titled 2011 debut while also exploring the tension-building possibilities in a whisper.

Opening brace Suddenly and Eliza are the accessible entranceway into a tension-filled and challenging album, channelling something of the dark pop that forebears Siouxsie Sioux and PJ Harvey created.

Elsewhere, Calvi moves between the intimate, the cinematic and the cathartic with a naturalness that suggests the world is her oyster.
