Music review: King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard has garnered a reputation for its head-spinning brand of psychedelia, tongue-twisting album titles, and, in 2017, Herculean levels of endeavour.

Their fourth release this year (a fifth is planned before year’s end), Polygondwanaland, sees the Melbournian septet pinball from sludgy metal riffs to free-jazz noodling - often in the course of the same track; the 11-minute Crumbling Castle features odd time signatures nestled beside intricate acoustic folk - and pastoral arrangements.

Though at times prog-by-numbers, their trippy sonic tapestries and endorsement of DIY aesthetics are most commendable.
