Music and dance allow Bethany Cox the freedom to be in her own world full of creativity and, in her case, achievement.

The 18-year-old began playing the piano and learning ballet when she was ‘‘young''.

Since then, she has gone on to receive several awards and perform in a variety of groups.

Last year, she gained her grade eight award with merit from the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music.

‘‘Piano is something to take your mind off other things. It's fun to have something that's part of you,'' she said.

Bethany performed in the Gore High School Jazz Band from 2005 to 2008 and was awarded best soloist at the Southland Secondary Schools Jazz Festival in 2007.

She was also a member of the trio Flutissimo which won the Southland Secondary Schools Chamber Music Competition in 2007.

For her efforts, the Gore Women's Soroptimist Club awarded her a scholarship last year.

Performing ballet is also a passion of hers, and last year she gained her grade eight award with distinction from the Royal Academy of Dance.

However, her talent is not limited to the stage.

She passed her NCEA level 1 and 2 with excellence and attended the 2009 Rotary National Science and Technology Forum.

Achievements: Associated Board of the Royal School of Music grade eight, with merit; best soloist at Southland Secondary Schools Jazz Festival 2007; member of Flutissimo, winner of the Southland Secondary Schools Chamber Music Competition 2007; scholarship recipient for music from Gore Women's Sorptimist Club; Royal Academy of Dance grade eight, with distinction, for ballet.

Role model: "I always look up to my older brother and sisters. They always try hard and succeed at what they do".

Hopes for the future: To take a gap year and work in Canada before deciding on a study path.
