Cookbooks

Jo Seagar's latest book, A bit of what you fancy (Random House), continues her maximum effect for minimum effort philosophy.

This is illustrated in the first recipe, Nutella hazelnut chocolate cake, which contains just the chocolate hazelnut spread, eggs and flour: the frosting has more ingredients than the cake.

However, not all are that simple: there are roulades, crumbed, baked and roasted dishes, salads, mini-frittatas, and, matching the generous baking section at the front, a generous dessert and sweet section at the back. While some of the dishes are healthy, ''everyday'' eating, many are ''special occasion'' unless you are unconcerned about your weight, but then, they are a bit of what you might fancy.

Bakers and cake decorators will relish Karla Goodwin's Bluebells Cakery (Random House), recipes from the eponymous cafe and bakery in Hillsborough, Auckland.

With hints, tips and instructions for rosette or ruffle icings, cup-cake decorations, as well as recipes for everything from teatime sandwiches and savouries, to biscuits, slices, desserts, cakes and sweets, it's an indulgent book of treats.
