Richard Wagstaff is president of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions.
What smell do you find irresistible?
I know it's cliché but I really do love the smell of fresh coffee in the morning. It's such an invigorating (and tasty) way to start the day.
What is your least favourite thing about humanity?
Sadly humans have done some pretty terrible things to each other. Our history of violence, intolerance, cruelty and fascism I find deeply distressing. Even so, I do believe that people are inherently good, and that we can do great things if we stand together in solidarity to ensure a better world.
What is one strong childhood memory?
Going on holiday in the caravan with my family - all seven of us at the beach at Mt Maunganui in the summer. Sea, sun, the taste of salt and lots of fun.
What is your message?
When we work together we can achieve so much. We can have the New Zealand of our dreams if we treat each other with dignity and respect, and focus on having a more equal society, with working people getting their fair share.
If you were going to an island and could take only three things, what would they be and why?
Family and friends so I am surrounded by those I love most, my iPad so I could connect to Spotify and listen to Lucinda Williams, and a fridge full of good craft beer in case I get thirsty.
