The Zero Carbon Act! In 2016, Generation Zero launched an ambitious project: having rangatahi (youth) across New Zealand write a new climate law for New Zealand. The Act has now been introduced into Parliament by the Government, which is super exciting. But there are some serious issues with the proposed draft legislation. So, along with School Strike 4 Climate, we're focused on getting tens of thousands of New Zealanders to submit on the Act to make it the best it can be!
WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED?
I got involved in the climate movement after a freak storm left waves crashing into my Nelson home, waking me up to the urgency of climate change and how important it is for New Zealand to cut emissions and keep fossil fuels in the ground. I was inspired to believe I could make a difference after talking at a climate hui to Greta Thunberg, the Swedish schoolgirl who started the School Strike for Climate movement.
WHAT SHOULD WE HOPE FOR?
An inclusive sustainable future where future generations can learn, work and play in a liveable climate; hopefully with some wildlife and coral reefs still intact! This future is entirely possible but only if we take urgent action to make it happen.
HOW DO WE GET THERE?
The School Strike 4 Climate movement is a great place to start. Around the world inspiring people-powered movements are forming, often led by the youth that will be most affected by climate change. These put pressure on leaders to end fossil fuel exploitation and build sustainable futures for people and for the planet: sea levels may be rising but so are we!
