Taieri Times 10 co-ordinator Elizabeth Dalton wishes the $10 note supply was all taken but is pleased the people who accepted the challenge exceeded expectations.

About 10 weeks ago, the Taieri Community Facility Trust gave Mrs Dalton 500 $10 notes to hand out to people, with the proviso the money was multiplied 10 times and then returned to the trust by December 1 for the proposed Taieri Aquatic Centre.

She had hoped all the $10 notes would have been taken in the 10 weeks but some remained.

''Not as many were taken as we hoped but many of the people who took a $10 note multiplied it by more than 10 times - they have done a great job.''

One participant who went beyond the call of duty was Mosgiel pensioner Gaynor Robson. She baked and sold 52 batches of shortbread and 13 batches of muffins in three flavours - bran, carrot and orange.

Each batch had a dozen pieces of the baking.

She spent the $10 on butter, flour and cornflour.

After making and selling six batches, she used some of the money raised to make more goodies to sell.

She had set herself a fundraising target of $200 but the pool of money ''just grew and grew and grew'', Mrs Robson said.

She gave Mrs Dalton $330 to bank on Friday.

Mrs Robson said she aqua-jogged at Mosgiel Pool four times a week and usually did 40 lengths in a one-hour session.

Despite loving the existing pool, a new facility was needed, she said.

''I want a new pool and I'd like to see it in my lifetime,'' she said.

Mrs Dalton said the fundraiser would remain open until the $10 notes were all taken. People could register at www.taieritimes10.nz.
