4WD groups aid health workers

Critical care health workers were still being transported to their hospital jobs by off-road vehicle as icy roads around Dunedin's hill suburbs created chaos for some early morning commuters yesterday.

Red Cross programme co-ordinator Richard Marlow said volunteers from the Otago recreational 4WD group were responsible for transporting Southern District Health Board staff to work during the recent snowstorm.

Icy roads on the hill suburbs were now creating travel issues for critical health care workers, who live in such areas, as they plan commuting for shift work, Mr Marlow said.

Four-wheel-drive vehicles were still "the only option" for travel in some suburbs, he said.

A separate group of 4WD enthusiasts, the Land Rover Owners Club Otago, delivered about 25 "meals on wheels" to elderly residents in ice-affected homes in Opoho, Pine Hill, Wakari and the hills of Green Island yesterday, spokesman Michael Adam said.

The Land Rover volunteers have also provided transport for rest-home workers during the recent snowstorm, Mr Adam said.
