Police have named the man who died after being hit by a car in Fairfield.

He was Albert (Bert) Arthur Wolf (86), of Dunedin.

A St John spokeswoman said an ambulance was called about 7pm on Monday after a report of a car hitting a pedestrian on the corner of Flower St and Main South Rd.

Mr Wolf, who sang with the Royal Dunedin Male Choir, was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital where he later died.

The driver of the vehicle was an 88-year-old Mosgiel man, who was not injured.

A lane of Main South Rd was closed after the incident as the serious crash unit examined the scene, he said.

A police spokesman said inquiries were continuing into the cause of the accident.
