Commercial accommodation is still available for the Rugby World Cup, Dunedin tourism officials say.

Dunedin Visitor Centre manager Louise van de Vlierd said overseas rugby supporters had been advised to book early, but there were still "beds available", and more had come on the market, following a cancellation yesterday.

Fans booking at the last minute could not expect to be in the centre of town and may only find accommodation on the outskirts of the city, she said.

More private residences were available to cater for extra demand, she said.

A Tourism Dunedin accommodation audit showed Dunedin had about 2100 rooms, including hotel, motel, dormitories, farmstays, homestays, and private rooms, such as B & Bs, available.

The rooms could accommodate up to 5488 people, or 6325 when more beds were added.

Tourism Dunedin chief executive Hamish Saxton said the tournament was "a wonderful opportunity to bring visitors into the city and show our city off".

More than 2000 media representatives were expected and the Rugby World Cup offered a chance to "showcase our city" to a global audience.

"It's a great opportunity to `Dunedinise' the Rugby World Cup."

A weekly guide of "what's on" would be available for visitors, and an additional brochure would be available for Dunedin residents detailing more than 80 local events to be held during the tournament.
