Actions of truck driver praised

The driver of a burning EnviroWaste rubbish truck earned the gratitude of Corstorphine School, in Dunedin, yesterday morning.

The truck had stopped about 9.45am to pick up rubbish from a skip outside some empty classrooms when the driver noticed the fire under his vehicle.

Acting principal Jenny Munro said the driver backed the burning truck down the driveway to the school entrance.

"He was trying to back the truck out to get it away from the school buildings which was very good of him . . ."

The truck was too far away for school fire hoses to reach but the driver and a passing Corstorphine resident, Craig Buist, tackled the fire with extinguishers until the Fire Service arrived.
