Alert after burglaries, thefts

Police are warning residents in Dunedin's southern suburbs to be vigilant after a string of burglaries and thefts in the area during the weekend.

Two car thefts and two raids on homes were among seven crimes reported to police from late Friday night until early Sunday.

The crimes targeted properties and cars in the suburbs of Caversham, Corstorphine, South Dunedin and St Clair.

Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson urged residents of southern Dunedin suburbs to lock their homes and cars overnight, and to make sure all property was removed from vehicles.

No-one had been arrested in relation to any of the offences, but the offenders were disturbed during an attempt to steal a car from the garage of a St Clair address.

One of the stolen vehicles from the spree, a Mitsubishi Lancer, licence plate DSK960, remained missing, Snr Sgt Thomson said.

Police were keeping an open mind as to whether the offences were linked.

``Chances are they could be, but we are looking through it.''

``No doubt we will be doing some preventive [activities] in those areas in the coming days.''

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
