Allegedly drunk motorcyclist 'wanted to have some fun'

A motorcyclist who told police he "wanted to have some fun on the empty roads" was allegedly more than three times the legal breath alcohol limit.

The 32-year-old man was speeding along Cumberland St at 4.23am yesterday when he was spotted by officers out on patrol, Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin, said.

When he was stopped, the man admitted to consuming approximately 15 cans of alcohol before he decided he "wanted to have some fun on the empty roads," Sgt Lee said.

He underwent breath testing procedures and recorded a breath alcohol level of 808mcg — over three times the legal limit of 250mcg.

The man was summoned to appear in Dunedin District Court at a later date and was charged with excess breath alcohol and driving while forbidden.

His motorcycle was also impounded, Sgt Lee said.

Thirty minutes earlier, a 26-year-old man in Great King St crashed into two parked vehicles.

When police arrived, he told officers was swerving to avoid a cat that ran into the road.

Police did not find the cat.

The man underwent breath testing procedures and recorded a breath alcohol level of 556mcg.

He was summoned to appear in Dunedin District Court at a later date.
