Nine-year-old Amelia Steele, of Kyeburn, meets SPCA Otago resident dog Archie, in Dunedin yesterday.

The Maniototo Area School pupil, who donated more than $2200 to the animal shelter, visited its Opoho premises yesterday.

SPCA Otago chief executive Sophie McSkimming said Amelia was ''amazing''.

''If every child was like Amelia we would be able to look after every animal in the country.''

Amelia said she raised the money for one reason: ''I've always loved animals.''

It took her about a month.

She made fudge, muffins, scones, biscuits and cakes to sell to teachers at her school on Wednesdays and Fridays.

She had a stall at a Ranfurly market day and sold SPCA merchandise and set up a pet food donation box at a supermarket.

She also organised a mufti day at her school for pupils to bring pet food donations.

''On the mufti day, we got more than 40 cans of dog and cat food and raised $131.50.''

Amelia's mother, Janet, said her ''enthusiastic and very passionate'' daughter was well supported by the Maniototo community.

Amelia was in Dunedin yesterday on a field trip with 25 of her schoolmates, who were set for an overnight stay at Otago Museum, she said.

Ms McSkimming said the money would be used for general day-to-day operations of the animal shelter.
