Arrest after garden thefts in St Kilda

A man has been arrested after an elderly Dunedin woman reported several thefts of plants and garden ornaments last month.

Sergeant John Hedges, of Dunedin, said the alleged ''green-fingered thief'', a 63-year-old man, was set to appear in the Dunedin District Court on burglary charges in relation to three incidents in St Kilda.

The 87-year-old woman was upset by the loss of items from her garden, and Sgt Hedges said he was very pleased that  persistent police work had paid off.

"It's quite cool... that was a win.''

Meanwhile, police were still looking for a person after garden items and gnomes were taken in Mosgiel earlier this month.

About six properties were targetted by the offender, who took the ornaments, hoses and gardening gear from Forfar St and Factory Rd.

Sgt Hedges also issued a warning for people to secure their vehicles in South Dunedin after thefts from two unlocked vehicles near Pak'nSave in Hillside Rd.
