Arrest over St Clair fire

Police have arrested a 31-year-old South Dunedin man in relation to an apartment fire in St Clair on Saturday.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the man was arrested yesterday and charged with "wilfully setting fire'' to the property.

Thick black smoke could be seen by residents across the city as several fire appliances tackled the Lock St blaze about 9.15am.

The fire threatened to spread to three adjoining apartments.

A man in his 20s believed to live in the apartment was not home at the time.

A woman in a neighbouring apartment was treated by St John at the scene but was not taken to hospital.

The 31-year-old man was released on bail and will appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday.
