Dunedin juggler and engineer Miguel Nitis enjoys a sunny moment at the Dunedin Botanic Garden, while taking part in a celebration of World Juggling Day.

Mr Nitis (36), who is also a member of the Otago Magic Circle, said he began juggling at 12, but had become more active after joining the Dunedin Fire and Circus Club in 2008.

Juggling was an ancient activity, and depicted in Egyptian art about 3000 years ago.

"It’s one of those long-celebrated skills."

Juggling also had a wide appeal and jugglers were attracted by different things, including the joy of performing.

He was more interested in the mathematical and pattern-making side.

"I suppose it’s a way of having something relaxing that you connect with."

He remained enthusiastic about juggling and its sometimes contradictory challenges. Some juggling tricks took years to master, but others took only a few seconds, he said at the Saturday event.
