For Kim Allan, that is not the case.
Miss Allan was deputy principal at Taieri College before taking on the role of principal at Lee Stream Primary School in August this year.
Despite the move, she says, her hands are still just as full.
Three months into her new role, she is settling into her more rural surroundings, and finding she is exercising parts of her brain that have not been challenged for a long time.
Instead of working predominantly with year 7-10 pupils, she is enjoying teaching year 1-8 pupils at the two-classroom Lee Stream School.
''Kids are kids and they still have their needs.
''It's a different role, of course, because I'm in the classroom as well as the administration side now. Before, I was just in administration.''
One of the most enjoyable parts of her new position was having time to get to know each pupil well, and give more ''one-on-one'' time in the classroom.
''It's amazing. You can have really good learning conversations with all the kids.
''It's a lot more rewarding.
''It's nice to have interaction with the younger ones. I get to use a more diverse range of skills because I'm working with a wider range of ages.
''You have to delve back into the toolbox because you're always in a multilevel classroom.''
Miss Allan said she was also enjoying learning the ropes of running a school, and coming to terms with being in control.
''I'm it. I'm having to learn about property and finance, as well as doing my teaching.''
She was appreciative of all the support she had received from the community in the first few months, and said it was one of the main reasons she had been able to settle in so quickly.
''It's nice to be back in the classroom, and the community here have been wonderful. They've been very welcoming and I've settled in well.''
