The final stage of a roadside beautification project in Fairfield is under way, almost four years after the project started.

Low-lying shrubbery and a general tidy-up were now possible near the intersection of Main Rd and Old Brighton Rd after the Saddle Hill Community Board and residents came to an agreement recently.

Community board chairman Scott Weatherall said the project started ''three or four years'' ago and had been done as finances became available.

The last stage had been delayed because some residents were worried about some aspects of the work, including the loss of parking on road reserve outside their houses.

''We aren't aiming to take anybody's off-street parking away. We were just trying to tidy it up and enhance it.''

Money had also become available for the project from the sale of timber from the Walton Park reserve forest harvest.

A total of $20,000 from the harvest would be split evenly between the Fairfield beautification project and upgrading the reserve.

The beautification work was due to start this week and it was expected to be completed by the end of the month.
