Dunedin Hospital's children's ward will get $125,000 of new medical equipment, toys and furniture after supermarket workers got behind a fundraising drive.
Progressive Enterprises division manager meat Allister Watson said everybody "from the people pushing the trolleys through to the managing director" had been part of the Fresh Futures Children's Hospital Appeal.
There had been such enthusiasm for the project, people did not have to be motivated to get involved, he said.
Whether it was putting stickers on to product, manning sausage sizzles, organising golf games or cycling from one end of the country to the other, all 19,000 workers around the country had contributed in some way.
Otago District Health Board women's, children's and public health group manager Pip Stewart said the hospital was thrilled with the donation, which allowed them to buy extras for the children's ward.
"This enables us to provide some of those things we would like to purchase but are unable to with current funds."
The Otago community gave fantastic support to the children's ward, she said.
This is the second year the Fresh Futures project has run and money raised last year was used to purchase a special incubator to transport newborns.
Nationally, almost $1 million was raised, the money going to 10 different hospitals.
Staff from Countdown, Woolworths, Supervalue and Fresh Choice supermarkets and Dick Smith Electronics were involved.
