Blast such as West's impossible in Dunedin

Unlike its Texas counterpart, the Dunedin fertiliser works is safe from an explosion, Ravensdown Ravensbourne fertiliser works manager Tony Gray says.

Mr Gray said it appeared the explosion at the fertiliser factory in Texas on Thursday involved anhydrous ammonia.

''That's a liquid form of ammonia that is kept in tanks under pressure, and the liquids and gases are volatile. We have never stored it here, we've never sold it, we've never made it and none of our farmers use that product.''

Ravensdown communications manager Gareth Richards said the ''dangerous and explosive'' liquid had never been manufactured, or used by farmers, in New Zealand, but it was used by farmers in the United States in large quantities.

''It is used in America, where the tractors are driving these giant tanks across paddocks and spraying ammonia liquid into the soil.''
