Board to meet NZTA

A frustrating Green Island intersection will be the focus of a meeting of the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Saddle Hill Community Board.

Board chairman Scott Weatherall said the agency was responsible for the intersection and had responded positively to a request to attend a community meeting on the concerns residents had with it.

In the Taieri Times last month, residents said the intersection on the Abbotsford side of the Southern Motorway underpass, on Main South Rd between Green Island and Sunnyvale, needed an improvement, such as a roundabout.

Any motorist travelling north on the motorway and taking the offramp to Sunnyvale or Green Island had long waits to get on Main South Rd.

The waiting motorist had to turn their body to get a clear view of vehicles travelling from Sunnyvale, residents said.

At the meeting, the agency would explain why the intersection was designed as it was.

Mr Weatherall said the board was keen to hear any suggestions for improvement.

''Then, hopefully, we can come up with a positive way forward.''

At a board meeting last month, member John Moyle said a possible remedy was to move the path of the offramp closer to Sunnyvale.

''It wouldn't interfere with the intersection and you'd get a good view and you'd be able to get out.''
