The bollards, at the George St and Hanover St entrances of the mall, were installed about two weeks ago.
Icon Group head of asset management Paul Tanday said the company was constantly looking at ways to improve the customer experience at Meridian Mall, which it owned.
"With the security issues seen elsewhere in New Zealand we thought it would be prudent to install these bollards at our entrances to protect our customers, tenants and the wider community," Mr Tanday said.
Tru-Bilt Industries general manager Mark Taylor said the Dunedin-based firm had supplied the bollards, although it had not installed them.
The company had experienced a slow increase in sales in the South, but it was small compared to the amount of bollards that were being purchased for Auckland.
"Dunedin needs to wake up, everyone else needs to wake up, because it will happen elsewhere," Mr Taylor said.
A series of high-profile ram-raids has drawn attention this year, including one in which three stolen vehicles were driven through Auckland’s Ormiston shopping centre in May.
Two 15-year-olds were charged with burglary following the incident.
