Burns victim still bedridden but healing slowly

Mosgiel teenager Jamie Jury remains confined to a hospital bed in Christchurch while his father pushes for his transfer to Dunedin Hospital.

Jamie (18) received burns to 60% of his body, including his lungs, throat, face, arms, hands and legs, when an lpg gas bottle he was huffing from exploded on July 2.

Steven Jury said his son's recovery was slow but steady.

"He's lucky to get to the stage he's at, really," Mr Jury said.

Jamie almost died and spent weeks in an induced coma at the intensive care unit at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.

In August, he was transferred to Christchurch, where he remained in a burns ward.

Mr Jury had returned to fulltime work but went to see his son whenever he had a few days off.

He said Jamie was frustrated at being bedridden.

"His feet haven't touched the floor yet. I've had him outside in the sun in his bed, but he would just like to jump up and walk out, although he can't."

Mr Jury said he was trying to get Jamie transferred to Dunedin Hospital. Eventually, doctors would allow it based on Jamie's health, he said.

The teenager's skin grafts were healing well and he had regular physio to stretch the skin, but he had also developed bed sores.

"I think he will make a full recovery. It's just going to be a very slow process," Mr Jury said.

Fellow Mosgiel teenager Brendon McLeod (17), also injured in the huffing incident, was out of hospital and back in Mosgiel, Mr Jury said.
