A burnt-out car which appeared in the middle of a South Dunedin sports field in mysterious circumstances this week has been removed from the ground.

The burned-out 1993 Daihatsu Mira LX appeared on Bathgate Park on Tuesday, on its side in the middle of the Macandrew Rd sports field.

There was minimal damage apparent on the turf and no sign of a fire around the vehicle, suggesting it had been dragged or rolled there after being set alight.

However, a police spokeswoman was unable to say whether police had been notified of the car or whether it had been reported stolen.

Dunedin City Council compliance, animal and parking services team leader Peter Hanlin said the council was arranging for a tow company to remove the vehicle from the park yesterday.

''This will be done as carefully as possibly to limit any damage to the ground.

''Because of its condition, the car will be disposed of.''
