It's been a busy day for lifeguards and others at Dunedin beaches with 12 rescues reported.

In the latest incident on Wednesday, two men were rescued after getting caught in a rip at Tomahawk Beach.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called about 7.30pm after the pair were dragged about 300 metres out to sea.

The men were believed to have been brought back to the beach by surfers in the area.

They were described as having minor injuries and taken to Dunedin Hospital.

St Clair Surf Lifesaving Club chairman Cam Burrow said there were 11 rescues at St Kilda beach alone - one involving a group of eight people.

Mr Burrow urged Dunedin residents to be vigilant at the beach, making sure to swim at patrolled beaches between the flags, and to be aware of their physical limits in the water.

"St Kilda, St Clair and Tomahawk beaches are really dangerous at this time of year because there are large holes and large rips out there.''
